FAQs

1 / Can we hire you for private events?

For sure!  We are available for weddings, funerals, corporates and any kind of event.  Find more information here, or contact us on info@ingoma.co.za for a quote whenever you need an African choir in your life!

2 / How many are there in the choir?

Normally our membership hovers around 25-30 people, and so, due to work schedules etc, we usually end up with 20 to 26, say, available for any particular event.  We prefer to make the opportunities available for all, but we can consider smaller groups if that's appropriate for your venue or event.

3 / What if we only want a few singers, not the whole choir?

Whilst we prefer to open up opportunities to the whole group for events such as weddings where we sing choral pieces, we are also able to field bespoke quartets or octets or even soloists / particular vocal group, to meet your brief.

4 / What kinds of songs do you sing?

We largely sing traditional African choral music in isiXhosa and other African languages, and sing acappella or with a simple drum.  We do also however sing some English songs such as pop and American gospel, and we can learn special requests if appropriate to our style.  Listen here to some of our songs, or look at our repertoire here.

5 / Can you learn special requests?

We can, but we do review styles to make sure that we can do the song justice and also that we have time to learn it.  We charge extra to learn new songs especially.

6 / Can you travel out of the Cape Town area?

Definitely!  We have done gigs right up the Garden Route towards Eastern Cape, and are keen to travel further.

7 / Do you need a stage / microphones / piano etc

Not usually no - we are very low tech and easy to work with as we carry the beautiful instruments of our voices around with us everywhere!  Occasionally we use microphones but we usually sing unplugged and acapella.

8 / Do host regular concerts for the public?

We try and perform our own concerts regularly and a February concert in our home town of Hout Bay has become an annual event.  We have also hosted winter concerts in other areas of the Cape Peninsula.  Check here or follow us on Facebook for updates on where and when we are performing.

9 / We'd love to see you perform when we're visiting Cape Town but you don't have any concerts scheduled...

We suggest that you visit our Wednesday night rehearsal, by prior arrangement, either privately arranged with us, or as part of a township tour.  See here for more info.   Alternatively you could consider hiring us for a private event at your holiday home or a local restaurant.

10 / Do the choir members get paid?

They certainly do!  A proportion - usually around 10% of the fee - is kept within the Ingoma Foundation to pay for costs and invest in development, and the rest is split between the conductor and members, providing very welcome additional revenue for them.

11 / How much does it cost to hire the choir?

Email us at info@ingoma.co.za to let us know your requirements so we can quote.  As a guide our wedding rate is currently around R15k.   But we like to be flexible to respond to different budgets and requirements.

12 / Are you a registered charity?

We are run by the Ingoma Foundation which is a registered Non-Profit Company in South Africa (Registration Number 2020/593225/08)

13 / Do you have a children's choir?

We do not, but we do have some links with the schools in Imizamo Yethu, so could potentially organise a children's choir, and have done so in the past!
